Trades
Electricians, plumbers, builders, and heating engineers — for whom every unanswered call is a job that went to someone else.
Trades work doesn't pause for the phone. You're mid-rewire, mid-install, or elbow-deep in a boiler when the call comes in, and by the time you're free to check who rang, they've often already called the next name on the list. It's not a reflection of how good the work is — it's just physics. You can't be on a job and on a call at the same time.
The same pattern shows up around quotes. A customer gets three call-outs for the same kitchen rewire, and the job usually goes to whoever got back to them first and made booking easy — not necessarily whoever would have done the best job. Being genuinely excellent at the trade itself doesn't protect against losing work to slower response times.
We build systems specifically for how trades businesses actually operate: unpredictable days, jobs that run over, emergency call-outs mixed in with planned work, and a phone that needs answering even when both your hands are full.
This applies whether you're a sole trader with a single van or a small team running several jobs a day. The scale changes what's worth automating first, but the underlying pattern — good work undermined by gaps in coverage, not by the quality of the work itself — shows up at every size of trades business we've worked with.
A Typical Day
A typical day for a one- or two-van operation involves being on tools for six, seven, eight hours, with the phone ringing throughout — some calls routine, some urgent, most arriving at exactly the wrong moment to answer properly. Without a system, that means either stopping work to take the call (and the job in front of you slows down) or letting it ring out (and the job on the other end of the phone goes elsewhere). Neither is a good trade-off, and it's one that a well-built AI system removes rather than manages.
In Practice
What this looks like day to day
Emergency call-outs handled properly
A caller with a burst pipe gets an answer and a booked emergency slot, even if you're mid-job — with urgency recognised and routed differently to a routine enquiry.
Quotes that don't go cold
Quotes for bigger work get chased automatically instead of sitting in a sent-items folder until the customer books with someone else.
Fewer wasted trips
Job reminders go out the day before, cutting the wasted trips to properties where nobody's in or the job's been forgotten about.
A record of every call
Every enquiry is logged automatically, so a customer who calls back next month about a different job doesn't have to explain their address and history again from scratch.
Why Industry-Specific
Why we don't use one system for every business
It would be simpler, and cheaper for us, to build one generic AI receptionist and sell a slightly different colour scheme to every industry. We don't, because it wouldn't actually work well for anyone. What counts as an urgent enquiry, how bookings are actually structured, what a customer is likely to ask first — all of that differs meaningfully between a tradesbusiness and, say, a solicitor's office or a hotel front desk.
Scoping around your specific industry means the system asks the right follow-up questions, recognises genuine urgency correctly, and represents your business in a way that feels accurate rather than generic — the difference between a customer feeling like they're talking to your business, and feeling like they're talking to a chatbot that happens to mention your business's name.
This is also why our discovery call always starts with your actual business rather than a template for your industry — even within trades, no two businesses run identically, and the system should reflect yours specifically, not just the sector average.
Relevant services
For trades businesses, these tend to matter most:
Enquiries & Leads
Every call, message, and web enquiry answered the moment it arrives — not whenever you next get a free minute.
Follow-Ups & Nurture
The quote that never got chased, the review that was never asked for — handled automatically, every time.
Bookings & Scheduling
A calendar that fills itself, reminds people to actually turn up, and stops double-bookings before they happen.
Common questions
Can it tell the difference between an emergency and a routine enquiry?
Yes — this is one of the first things we scope. Emergency call-outs get routed and escalated differently to a routine quote request.
I'm often on-site with no signal. Does that break anything?
No — the whole point is that the system runs independently of you being reachable in the moment. You catch up on bookings and messages when you're back online.
Can it give out an actual quote over the phone?
Only for the kind of standard, well-defined jobs you're comfortable pricing without seeing the site first. Anything that needs a look before pricing gets captured and booked in as a call-out or site visit instead.
What if a customer wants to negotiate on price during the call?
That's exactly the kind of conversation that gets escalated to you rather than handled automatically — the system is built to recognise when a judgement call is needed, not to negotiate on your behalf.
Does this work for a one-person operation, or only bigger trades businesses?
It works for both, and arguably matters most for a one- or two-person operation, where there's nobody else to catch the calls you can't take yourself.
Can it cover multiple trades if we do a bit of everything?
Yes — during scoping we'll map out your actual service list, however broad, so the system can answer accurately across everything you cover rather than just one specialism.
